In the sequel, Valak embarks on a murderous spree across Europe, spanning from Hungary to France, driven by the quest for a holy relic that holds the potential to grant the demon nun angelic superpowers. Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga) becomes the primary obstacle standing in Valak’s way. The demon seeks the eyes of Saint Lucy, the patron saint of the blind, to restore the power lost when it was an angel rejected by God. Unbeknownst to Valak, these eyes are buried in the chapel of the boarding school where Maurice, now a handyman, works. Valak, targeting individuals with rosary beads bearing the family crest of Saint Lucy, discovers the relic’s location when Sisters Irene and Debra (Storm Reid) arrive. With the assistance of teacher Kate (Anna Popplewell) and her daughter Sophie (Katelyn Rose Downey), Irene and Debra confront the possessed Maurice, unearthing the relic from beneath the chapel’s floor. However, Valak breaks free before a battle ensues for control of the relic, resulting in the demon using it to enhance its powers. To save herself, Irene taps into thoughts of her late mother and realizes she is a descendant of Saint Lucy, akin to Lorraine Warren. Joined by Debra, they transform the flooded room into the blood of Jesus, causing Valak to burn up. Irene rescues Maurice from Valak’s grasp, and the story concludes with Maurice returning to work at the school, forming a newfound family with Kate and Sophie.
