Ethan Renner (Kevin Costner) is a skilled CIA operative who, during a mission, collapses and learns that he is suffering from terminal brain cancer. Given only a few months to live, Ethan decides to retire from the agency and spend his remaining time with his estranged wife, Christine (played by Connie Nielsen), and teenage daughter, Zoey (played by Hailee Steinfeld).
However, Ethan’s plans take an unexpected turn when he is approached by Vivi Delay (played by Amber Heard), a CIA agent. Vivi offers Ethan an experimental drug that could potentially extend his life. In exchange for the drug, she requires Ethan to complete one last mission: eliminate a terrorist known as “The Wolf.”
As Ethan attempts to balance his deadly mission with reconnecting with his daughter, comedic and action-packed situations ensue. The film explores themes of redemption, family, and the toll of a life spent in espionage.
In the climax, Ethan faces challenges in both his mission and his personal life. The truth about Vivi’s motives is revealed, leading to a confrontation. Simultaneously, Ethan tries to reconcile with his family.
The resolution sees Ethan successfully completing his mission but succumbing to the effects of his illness. He sacrifices himself to ensure the safety of his daughter and secure a better future for her. The film concludes with a sense of closure and redemption for Ethan.
“3 Days to Kill” received mixed reviews from critics, with praise for its action sequences and Kevin Costner’s performance but criticism for the convoluted plot and tonal shifts between action and family drama. The film aimed to blend elements of action and emotion, offering a unique take on the spy thriller genre.
