The story is set in the pre-Civil War United States and follows Solomon Northup (played by Chiwetel Ejiofor), a free black man living in New York with his family. He is a talented musician and is lured into a job opportunity in Washington, D.C. Once there, he is drugged, kidnapped, and sold into slavery.
Solomon is transported to the South, where he experiences the harsh realities of plantation life. He encounters various slave owners, including the cruel Edwin Epps (played by Michael Fassbender) and the more sympathetic Ford (played by Benedict Cumberbatch).
